When running the System Preparation tool (Sysprep.exe) on a Windows Vista-based computer, a fatal error may occur. An update for Windows Vista resolves this issue. Available for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, the update can be applied to all language versions of Windows Vista.

I have had this happen on a system when applying sysprep prior to shipment. The system shut down and would not restart, it appeared the only avenue to recover the system was a new install, unfortunately, as it was a one off system, I had not imaged the HDD, so it took quite a time to reinstall. Maybe this hotfix should be more widely released. I have built a number of vista machines and this is the first time I have seen this. I will, however be applying the hotfix to all future builds. I hope this is helpful to others.
