SyncToy - PC Magazine Best Free Software of 2010

I was pleased this morning to read that SyncToy 2.1 made it to PC Magazine list of "Best Free Software for 2010".  According to the article:

“What Microsoft once called a "powertoy" is now a great folder-to-folder synchronization tool. It's great for backing up data from local to network storage once in a while, either manually or scheduled”.

SyncToy is a tool that is based on the Sync Framework and is managed out of our group.  With over 1.8 million downloads since the release of version 2.0, it continues to be a great example (and test) of the Sync Framework.

If you are interested in giving SyncToy 2.1 a try, it can be downloaded from here.

Congratulations!  It is definitely a useful tool.  It's just a pity it doesn't enable the SeBackupPrivilege if available (usually when the user is a member of the Backup Operators group) - that would really put it up there as a backup program.

Unfortunately, the Echo function doesn't work as intended, as it does not make a mirror of the source folder to the backup ___location. If there are extra folders on the target ___location, it will leave them there.. Quite useless if you want to sync your master folder (let's say music or pictures library on the computer) with a mirror/backup on an external drive...
