There is known issue with SQL Server 2008 RTM Install. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/957453/. Based on this the upgrade may fail. To avoid this possible failure, recommendation is to use “slipstream” installation with SP1 and latest Cumulative Update package 8 (CU8).
- Cumulative Update Package 8 can be obtained from - https://support.microsoft.com/kb/975976
- SQL Server 2008 SP1 can be downloaded from - https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=66AB3DBB-BF3E-4F46-9559-CCC6A4F9DC19&displaylang=en
Follow below procedure to create a slipstream Installation for SQL Server 2008 + SP1 + CU8. After using this type of package, SP1 and CU8 gets applied in one shot.
